Open Letter: A Call to Preserve the Future of American Science
In June 2025, the scientific community was under unprecedented threat. Billions of dollars in research and training grants had been cancelled, universities were being targeted with punitive funding cuts, and international students were being detained and deported without due process. In the midst of this chaos, many groups spoke out about the harm being done to the American scientific enterprise, including professors, scientific societies, and universities. However, we felt that one perspective, though much-discussed, was often missing from the conversation: that of early-career scientists, who would be most affected by funding cuts and dwindling career prospects in the field we had chosen to dedicate our lives to.
SNAP wrote this open letter, A Call to Preserve the Future of American Science, to put this perspective into words. It was signed by over 1200 early-career scientists, including graduate students, postdocs, and early-career faculty from all 50 states and 20 countries.
